Girls Sprout Grows In 2012

by Marisa Escobedo, Volunteer Coordinator

Excelsior Youth Center's vegetable garden, located on the east side of the campus, will be under"growing" big changes in 2012. The volunteers were able to secure a comprehensive master plan to renovate and expand the garden, courtesy of landscape architect Kenneth Ball. Using Ball's plan as a basis for grant requests, EYC has received guarantees of grant monies totaling more than $13,000. Additionally, at least three volunteer groups are on board to provide materials and labor. When completely built, the garden will feature raised beds, a welcoming entrance, fruit trees, a hothouse, areas for herbs, berries, grapes, and row and spreading crops, an educational arena, a deer-proof fence, a rock garden, and bins for compost and mulch.

The garden, officially named "Girl Sprouts" in 2011, has been supported by a small core volunteer group since early 2009. Girls from science classes and an after-school garden club have participated in all aspects of gardening, and have partaken of the produce. With the expansion, EYC's culinary arts program will begin incorporating a fair amount of the organically grown garden vegetables into their supply chain.

Girl Sprouts would love to welcome more volunteers to participate both in the expansion and ongoing operation of the garden. Please contact EYC Volunteer Coordinator Marisa Escobedo for more information at 303-693-1550 ext. 311.
