Holiday Season Kick Off

By Jim Uhernik, Director of Business Development and Admissions

As the holidays rapidly approach Excelsior reaffirms our commitment to providing the best holiday season we can for girls in our care. Excelsior's Recreation Department and Volunteer Coordinator have been working hard with community organizations and volunteers to facilitate fun and interactive activities and events both on and off campus for girls. Our holiday season kicks off with members of the Colorado Chapter of Eastern Star hosting a holiday party on campus with cookies and gifts for the girls on December 4th. At this party, the girls will enjoy caroling, sweet treats and even a visit from St. Nick. Excelsior is happy to have Eastern Star continue this yearly tradition!

Next, a number of on campus activities and special events have been planned as well as several performances for girls to enjoy. In December Excelsior will host a local dance team, two musical performances, a cultural performance and a performance by girls participating in Excelsior's Hip Hop class, thanks in part to the Salah Charitable Trust. Additionally, throughout the month, Excelsior has several interactive recreational activities planned including: making gingerbread houses, baking cookies, making stockings, art classes, dance classes, and card making classes. Finally we also have many volunteer groups coming out to host holiday parties and gift donations for the girls through December.

Off campus recreation outings are an important part of treatment and health socialization and all girls are encouraged to maintain safe behaviors so they can take advantage of these opportunities. This holiday season the Recreation Department has planned a variety of outings for girls in the community. To name a few, this season we will be going ice skating, enjoying local holiday and cultural performances in the community, going to Zoo Lights, and watching Disney on Ice.

This year Excelsior is proud to support the efforts of several girls in our program to "give back" to those in need. One charity will include adopting three families from the Arc. Excelsior girls will be fundraising to support their efforts in supporting these families' wish lists. Another effort will include Excelsior girls volunteering on December 5th at the Denver Museum of Miniatures and Dolls. At this event Excelsior girls will help youngsters making gingerbread houses. Lastly, Excelsior's F.A.S.T. (Friendship Adventure Service Team) members will be participating in dinner preparations at a local community shelter.

Through recreation activities, events and community involvement, we hope that all girls in our care have a wonderful holiday season this year!
